Every spring, Japanese people enjoy the beautiful sakura flowers. It has taken such great importance in their lives. In fact, they have the words "Bijin Hakumei" 美人薄命 which means "Beauty and Long Life Seldom Go Together." Sakura blossoms are one of the most beautiful things for the Japanese but unfortunately, they don't last forever. In fact, sakura season is very short.
I love trees. And if I have the chance, I would love to see sakura trees. Unfortunately, they only grow in the colder parts of the world like Japan and Korea.
That is why I was surprised when I learned that Palawan boasts a tree called 'balayong' which blooms pink and white flowers around April, the same time sakura flowers bloom in Japan.
I grabbed the chance to buy seeds from Palawan farmers. They instructed me how to germinate the seeds and I am currently germinating one. I will give you an update when it becomes successful.
One main difference between the sakura and balayong is that sakuras have black trunks and branches while balayong trees have brown or grayish trunks and branches. The picture above shows sakura trees.
These are balayong trees.
Since sakura trees have darker bodies, the pink flowers look good with the contrast. Also, Japan doesn't get so much sunlight as we do in the Philippines so they get to enjoy the sakura trees more in a much cooler weather. Still, it would be great to have a balayong tree in your backyard.
P.S.
Today, I ate...
